Faces of a Family

Welcome to Faces of a Family!

This social studies unit has been designed for a first grade classroom.  It is meant to give children multiple experiences in discovering what family means to them.  Students will engage in tableaus, read-alouds, murals, and deep discussions to learn what family means, how families are alike and different, who is in a family, why families are important, what families do together, and what families in their classroom look like.

The first six web pages listed on the left are detailed lesson plans and materials that are a part of the unit.  On the "Children's Literature Connections" page, I have included summaries of twelve picture books that I find to be wonderful supplements and integrated parts of this unit.  Finally, the "Annotated Bibliography" will give you an in-depth look at all of the resources that I have used in creating this unit.

Enjoy!

During this unit, students will learn that there are many different ideas of a family.  Even a classroom is a family!
